What is the pH level of the skin?

Kāds ir ādas pH līmenis?

Ever since the widespread advertising of cosmetic products on TV that the normal pH level of the skin is 5.5, people believe this figure, but research shows that the pH of the skin is lower - closer to 4.7.

The surface of the skin is covered with a thin, slightly acidic layer of sebum and sweat secreted from the sebaceous glands. Sebum moisturises and lubricates the surface of the skin, helps maintain its elasticity, prevents dryness and cracking, and protects it from microbes and fungi.  This acidic layer is a very important barrier between the skin and the external environment, such as wind and pollution. It also reduces the growth of dangerous micro-organisms, protecting the skin from infections and reducing the appearance of acne, allergies, blemishes and other disorders.

The pH of the skin depends on gender, body area and external conditions, but keeping the pH of the skin slightly acidic is essential to keep this protective layer healthy. Even everyday habits such as washing the skin with soap, using different cosmetic products or simply washing in water with a high pH also change the top layer of the skin and result in a pH increase. If this surface layer loses its acidic environment, the skin becomes more susceptible to damage and bacterial infections. Increases in skin pH can even lead to skin diseases such as eczema, contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis and dry skin.

It should be noted that the pH of hair is also slightly acidic, so it is important to balance the pH with acidic detergents to avoid dry and unkempt hair.

Also, as you get older, your skin's acidity decreases and it's harder to keep it at the right level - your skin can feel dry and itchy.

To maintain healthy skin, it is very important to use cosmetics whose active ingredients in the formulas improve the skin's natural defense system and help maintain barrier functions. One of the aids for maintaining healthy skin is Green Wing floral waters and distillates, which have a slightly acidic pH - depending on the plant used, it ranges from 3.5 to 6.5. Floral waters can be used for facial cleansing, toning and pH balancing. The description of each product indicates the use, pH level and skin type for which the product is suitable. Your skin will love it!
